ED JAMES - RARITIES (2015)

 

Ed James began his music career at the age of 2, beating the crap out of pots and pans on the kitchen floor. He became the drummer of his first rock band when he was in the 5th grade. Fast forward to the present...and somewhere along the way, Ed earned a Bachelor's degree in music, released 4 solo records plus one album as "Pet The Pig". Ed James also had his tunes featured on VH1, NBC, independent films, as well as a bunch of compilation & tribute records.

So, just like the Lolas PPC compilation, this collection compiles all the songs (more or less hard to find) that can be found on Tributes and other sources. Plus a 2018 song which was not included on the original PPC version.

The purpose of this fan-made PPC anthology was to collect all of those japan bonus tracks and participations to various compilations. and tribute albums.

For information, tt was made at a time when Tim Boykin was on a hiatus with the Lolas, working on other projects, but four years later he was back with two albums of new material "A Dozen Or Seven Tapestries" and "Bulletproof" (2019). followed by another album in 2021 "All Rise". And since, Tim Boykin has released several singles and has just released an excellent new single "Work is the Blackmail of Survival", so a new album should follow sooner or later.

Obscure Power Pop (Never Reissued)

YANKEE ROSE - YANKEE ROSE (1980)

 

"Yankee Rose" was originally released on Goldmine Records in 1980 and has never been reissued on CD. Little is known about the band except the lead singer was Michael Adams (who is fronting a Rolling Stones tribute band in Southern California). They first released a non-LP single "Lady River / Dezarae" in 1978. This hopelessly obscure album was ranked #121 in the first Ultimate Power Pop Guide of John Borack, but climbed to #51 in the Shake Some Action 2.0 book of the same John Borack.

Canadian Garage/Power Pop (Never Reissued)

THE TEN COMMANDMENTS - HOME FIRES BURNING (1989)

 

Hailing from Toronto, the band began getting favourable press around town for their blend of '60's garage, punk, and country blues material. Following a career highlighting gig opening for LA's The Gun Club, Gordon and second guitarist John Deslaurier (Doughboys) left and Byron Pickles was brought in on guitar. Immediately the songwriting began to change and the departure of Daytona (who went onto Change Of Heart), brought about the new rhythm section of James and Ridley. It was this line-up that recorded a three song cassette. This line-up would follow this well received tape with the full-blown album 'Weird Out' in 1987 on the band's own Sensible Records label. During the recording of the 1988 7" single "Wherever I Go" they lost drummer Bob Ridley so the band turned to another drummer, Tony Jenkinson, to record their follow-up album the less garagey and more power pop) 'Home Fires Burning' in 1989, the main references coming to my ears would be The Barracudas. The Ten Commandments struggled throughout the early 1990's before calling it quits and released one more album in 1992 and then splt.

Third Album before the 2006 Comeback (Never Reissued)

THE SHIRTS - INNER SLEEVE (1980)

 

After Mike Thorne had the band all over the map on their second album, "Street Light Shine", the Shirts' third and final disc, "Inner Sleeve", finds Juice Newton/Jackie DeShannon producer John Palladino teamed up with Blood, Sweat & Tears/Steely Dan guitarist Georg Wadenius and they bring out the pop side of Annie Golden's band on these 11 tracks. The niche they've settled into here is the melodic short songtunes essential to the new wave, which, after all, was garage bands looking to find the most fun elements of '60s radio hits and exploit them to become rock stars. Golden had the talent to ride the charts along with Blondie, the Go Go's and, the Cars, and this album has the band headed in the right direction -- it's just too bad they quit after finding their groove here. "Inner Sleeve" is an inviting performance, especially for those who never encountered the other work by the truly underrated Shirts.

In the 70's, reading Bomp magazine, i remember Greg Shaw was featuring the bands according to the burgeoning local scenes. L.A, Chicago, Detroit, Cleveland or New York, It's only a few years later that i remembered this while reading Yellow Pills and a small feature written by Jordan Oakes : "My city's better than yours: Pop Capitol of the Country".

 

So, all these elements lead me to try to expand this "Best City" feature, to an "Interstate Battle of the Power Pop Bands". And the first volume i decided to make is "California vs Illinois" (the 90's). As i wanted a fair and gentle "battle", i asked Curt from PPO to take care of the Illinois State picks.

First European Mix (read carefully the notes) (Never Reissued)

THE LORDS OF THE NEW CHURCH - THE METHOD TO OUR MADNESS (1984)

 

As for the 3rd album "Method To Our Madness," there's actually two drastically different mixes of that album and only the first European and UK issue in vinyl and cassette released in Dec '84 are of the original and much better mix. The later US release from early 1985 and all CD releases worldwide are of the remixed version. For the original European/UK mix, the title track, "Method To My Madness" did not have the guitar doubled on the intro, there were no strings on "When Blood Runs Cold" and most of the other tracks had significantly different mixes. Also, the European/ UK release didn't include "SF & T" (it was a B-Side) but did include "Fresh Flesh." When the remixed album was released in the US in early '85, "Fresh Flesh" was in place of "SF & T" along with the new mix of the other songs. The recent Real Gone Records 2013 reissue includes both "SF&T" and "Fresh Flesh" like the original late 80's IRS CD release did. Up until about a decade ago, guitarist Brian James was completely unaware there was even a second version of their album! Apparently, the original mix is long lost.

TEX & THE HORSEHEADS - LIFE'S SO COOL (1985)

Hailing from Los Angeles, Tex & The Horseheads were one of the atom bombs which were giving explosive ear damage to anybody within a hundred-mile radius. fronted by the awesome, feral Linda "Texacala" Jones, Tex & The Horseheads were influenced by raunch 'n' roll, country, blues and what they drank!. "Life's So Cool" is a hard-hitting follow-up to their eight-song debut record. "Life's So Cool" is produced by John Doe (X), It starts with an uncredited quote from the old instrumental "Cat's Squirrel" (uncredited on the sleeve) and then goes on to such topics as drinking, fornication and legal tangles in songs that are substantial and thoughtfully developed.

Purple Vinyl Edition (Never Fully Reissued)

THE SUMMER SUNS - CALPURNIA (1991)

 

Between 1985 and 1996, Kim Williams and the Summer Suns (Dom Mariani, Pascal Bartolone, Gary Chambers, Joe Algeri and more) released one cassette (later reissued in the USA on a 10"), a limited edition LP of 1.000 ("Calpurnia"), a six-song CD ("Bedbugs") and five singles. In 2008, a greatest hits was released therefore compiling the best of the band recordings. Eight tracks from Calpurnia were included. Jangle Pop is guaranteed for all.
