The EP from the Lost Last Album

THE LAST - FADE TO BLACK (1982)

One year after the "L.A Explosion" album, The Last were back in studio. During the first half of the year, the band recorded their second album, "Look Again". According to Joe Nolte, Bomp didn't want to finance another LP due to their poor financial status at the time. "Look Again" was self-financed, thanks mainly to manager Randall Wixen, and produced by Jo Julian of Berlin. The band felt confident that they could get a major record deal with Look Again. It was never released. During the "Look Again" sessions , a new song "Fade To Black" was recorded. Vitus had written a song called "Eight After One" in March '79, and when in early 1980 The Last were approached to do a title song for the upcoming Dennis Christopher film "Fade To Black". They also were filmed for the movie "Fade To Black". A movie to be seen, reissued on DVD (you even can hear a song of the "Shoes" in the background). Unfortunately, they ditched the song, and cut "The Last" scene out, so the song languished till Bomp put it out as a 12 inch in '82. with three songs from the "Look Again" album which was finally released in 2020.

Catchy Guitar-driven Pop (Expanded 1999) (CD Only)

STARJETS - GODBLESS THE STARJETS (1979)

Hailing from Belfast, seventy miles away from Derry, hometown of The Undertones, the Starjets released one album "Godbless The Starjets", and had a hit with "War Stories", but the album failed to achieve any success, and as usual this was the end of the band but the beginning of a cult status. In 1999 Captain Oi reissued the album with all of the group's non-LP singles. A perfect purchase, now hard to find.  The album has never been reissued since and is not available on any major platform.
The band name reappeared duuring lockdown 2020 when Billie Joe Armstrong recorded a cover of "War Stories" for his album of favourite songs "No Fun Mondays".

Power Pop Glam (German CD Only)

THE BLONDES - SUMMER STRUT (2002)

When The Blondes formed back in 1998, they weren’t called the Blondes. They were called “Eagle”, and they released a 7-song CD with an L.A. label called Shipwrecords (all of which are available on their first album "The Blondes"). Don Henley of the Eagles wasn’t too happy with this and threatened to sue other people with the flick of a gold pen. Eagle - or, pardon me, The Blondes received a cease and desist letter, and they had to take all the CDs out of all the stores in L.A. The same year they released their second and final album, a top-notch hard-edged glam rock, with more hooks than a box of fishing tackle.
In 2003, as both of The Blondes albums had been released only in Germany, Teenacide Records made a best of the first two albums for the USA, "Swedish Heat" which was ranked #147 in the "The Ultimate Power Pop Guide".

Jeffrey Glenn's Lost Recordings

THE RETROS - RETROSPECTIVE (2000)

Jeffrey Glenn shared the recordings of his band as a CD-R given away that contained the Retros’ original songs and several cover songs. The songs had a crisp, jangly pseudo-60s sound, and the group’s harmonies on tunes like “Girl” and “Hey, Don’t Go Looking For Love” were terrific. The group synthesized the sounds of some favorite 60s bands - the Beach Boys and the Byrds. But, no label hadn’t released the band’s material on CD.
Jeff and the Retros recorded three wonderful cover tunes for three tribute major projects (Gene Clark, Buffalo Springfield & The Byrds).
Alas, Jeffrey Glenn died in 2009 and is now famous for his work as the compiler of the Lost Jukebox series of more than 240 CD-R.

Excellent BS Tribute + Not Lame Bonus (CD Only)

FIVE WAY STREET - A TRIBUTE TO BUFFALO SPRINGFIELD (2006)

&

RARE NOT LAME BONUS  CD-R

This tribute was put together by Eric Sorensen and features absolutely fantastic liner notes from noted expert John Einarson, author of several books for fans of mid/late 60’s rock, “Mr Tambourine Man: The Story of the Byrds' Gene Clark” and “Desperados: The Roots Of Country Rock" and "For What It's Worth: The Story of the Buffalo Springfield".

MOJO: "4 stars..vibrantly affectionate tribute to Buffalo Sprinfield. There`s respect aplenty here for the Springfield`s bejewelled legacy...mostly this hyper-jangly no-frills homage is aimed squarely at the shamelessly nostalgic."

UNCUT: "4 stars..affectionate postcard. Much like Not Lame`s earlier Gene Clark tribute, "Five Way Street" gather enthusiastic true believers of the pop underground to pay respect to a strong, misunderstood catalogue. Participating artists may lack name reconitionbut, thanks to their intimacy with the Springfield oeuvre, strong performances abound. The Retros` "We`ll See", for instance, transforms a forgotten out-take into perhaps the great lost Springfield single, while Walter Clevenger turns "Burned" into a jange-and-harmony gem ala 1965 Byrds. Most startling is Andrew Gold`s locomotive (as Byrds Of A Feather), "Bluebird", a monster of controlled chaos, one sounding truest to the Springfield`s live legend".

The Power Of Pop: "Buffalo Springfield deserves to take its place as an integral part of the 60s pop pantheon. Highlights of this set Noctorum (Marty Willson-Piper and Dave Mason) with a spine-tingling "Nowadays Clancy Can't Even Sing", Maplewood's sensitive "I Am A Child", The Grip Weeds muscular "Down to the Wire", The Windbreakers ethereal "Expecting To Fly", Jeff Larson's exciting "Questions" amongst others. Add also significant contributions from Walter Clevenger, George Usher Group, The Kennedys and Western Electric and you will agree that Five Way Street is a celebration that any fan of 60s pop-rock would want in on."

The Basher's 50 Years of Covers (PPA Exclusive)

NICK LOWE - PURE COVERS FOR NOW PEOPLE (2026)

A new episode in the PPA series of compiling covers or rarities released by an artist. Here are some covers by an all-time favorite of mine. The covers start in 1976 and go until the most recent one released in 2026. Among more than 60 covers available, i've chosen 26 of them, the running order is the one of their original editions. It begins with pub rock, and so it goes on with power pop and ends with country rock. As usual, I've made a custom artwork for this brand new PPA collection.

The Last Bomp Vinyl Compilation

VARIOUS - EXPERIMENTS IN DESTINY (1980)

Double LP compiling some Bomp singles, a few cuts from previous Bomp volumes (Paul Collins, The Martians), but also some Voxx (Crawdaddys, Wombats, Hypstrz, Lipstick Killers) and Quark (MnM's, Dadistics) releases and a few unreleased songs (Real Kids, Blake Xolton)

The Fourth Bomp Collection

VARIOUS - WAVES (An Anthology Of New Music Vol 2 Spring) (1980)

The second part of the Waves Anthology of New Music was released in 1980 by Bomp Records. The highlights featured The Martians, (their single was issued as Stars In The Sky in 1976), The Singles, Gary Charlson, Psycotic Pineapple (with T.V. Dunbar), and The Lonely Boys. This was the fourth Bomp compilation right after the excellent "Vampires From Outer Space".

The Second Bomp Compilation

VARIOUS - WAVES (An Anthology Of New Music Vol 1 January) (1979)

Pressed in blue vinyl, "Waves" was the second compilation from the legendary Bomp label. Greg Shaw and Bomp began as a rock magazine in '70 and became an "alternative music industry" in '74, then spread the word of "Power Pop" to the world with singles by the likes of the Flamin' Groovies, 20/20, Shoes or the Poppees. Highlights here include Tommy Rock (later known as Tommy Knight), 20/20, The Flashcubes, The Marshalls, The Romantics and Paul Collins.

The First Bomp Collection (Highlights of the First Years)

VARIOUS - THE BEST OF BOMP VOLUME ONE (1978)

Bomp started in 1974 for the purpose of recording and releasing music for the "hard core" rock & roll fans who made up the readership of BOMP magazine. This album "The Best of Bomp Volume One" included the highlights of the first four years, plus some unreleased gems for collectors. Some of the tracks included things by well-known bands that would otherwise never have been issued - The Wackers, The Choir, and Stooges material came to the label as such - and the rest, a majority of the artists discovered and originally produced by BOMP had gone to a greater fame.

Shindig's New Playlist (Issue #180) (PPA Exclusive)

DO WHAT YOU WANT TO DO (2026)

AMERICAN GARAGE, FOLK-ROCK & POP

INSPIRED BY RUBBER SOUL

SHINDIG MIX ISSUE 180

Released in 1965, the album led to volcanic eruptions in not only music, but also fashion and culture and according to Lennon, "Rubber Soul" was "the pot album". The Influence of evrything about it was huge. American garage bands, and indeed energing pop successes, all took note. To mark the release of the new 68-track "Rubber Soul (Special Edition)", Shindig! considers how this album changed the face of US '60 garage, pop and folk-rock forever, paving the way for psychedelia, powerpop and beyond, using 38 examples cut between April '66 and October '70, finally adding a few bonus.
Using some parts of the magazine, i've made a custom artwork and included the six pages about some of the songs included on the playlist.

Stunning Tribute to Jan Berry (CD Only)

ENCOMIUM IN MEMORIAM VOL. 1 - JAN BERRY OF JAN & DEAN (2008)

SHINDIG! REVIEW 2009
Produced by Jan Berry’s biographer Mark A. Moore and Cameron Michael Parkes and featuring a plethora of Jan and Dean cohorts like PF Sloan, Vic Diaz (Matadors), Jill Gibson, Mike Deasy, David Marks, Don Grady (Yellow Balloon) and Probyn Gregory (Brian Wilson band) and Lisa Mychols this is a wonderful tribute to the late singer.

Based on the original versions arranged and produced by Jan and transcribed from his personal music scores the intention is to illustrate how good Jan’s arrangements were and to inspire listeners to re-examine the original recordings.

Eschewing the big hits in favour of more complex tracks like ‘Anaheim Azusa’ etc., and ‘When It’s Over’ and post crash tracks from the unreleased ‘Carnival Of Sound’ this is a wonderful album. Containing three previously unreleased songs and audio snippets of Jan with Arnie in the garage and in the studio, this is essential for all fans of Jan and Dean.

The choice of material is first rate, the little snippets, the audio soundbites, the unreleased songs, the missing string and vocal parts, the poem to music. It is just so good . . .

Little Known Irish Power Pop (CD Only)

THE HORMONES - WHERE OLD GHOSTS MEET (1998)

Fronted by Marc Carroll, before going solo, this is an overlooked and little known gem with influences as Teenage Fanclub, Fountains of Wayne, The Byrds or The Beach Boys (the song "Mr Wilson" is a wonderful tribute to Brian Wilson). Another critically acclaimed album that flopped. An absolutely must-have.

Australian Power Pop Tribute (CD Only)

I´M IN LOVE...WITH THAT SONG! (1999)

23 Australian Bands Pay Tribute To The Genius Of The Replacements

Two years before the american tribute "Left Of The Dial (A Pop Tribute)" released on FDR (New Jersey label of the Who Tribute "Who's Not Forgotten", the 80s movie tribute "High School Reunion" and "About A Girl"), there was this excellent tribute with the best of the australian power pop bands: DM3, You Am I, The Finkers, Pyramidiacs, Brad Shepherd, Icecream Hands, Jack & The Beanstalk, and other famous bands as Celibate Rifles or Smudge (introduced here as Erbs & Pisces) covering the first single released by The Replacements "I'm In Trouble/If Only You Were Lonely" in just one song - I'm In Trouble on the left channel and If Only You Were Lonely on the right channel. For the fun of it, i have split the channels and added a special folder with the two songs as standalones.

Westerberg / DM3 (7" Flexi)

THE BOB MAGAZINE ISSUE 53 BONUS FLEXI (1996)

A 7" Flexi given away with Issue No. 53 of The BOB Magazine.
It features two unreleased songs at the time. The oddity being that "Make Your Own Kind Of Music" (Studio Outtake) is credited to Westerberg whereas it was a cover of the Will-O-Bees song originally written by Barry Mann & Cynthia Weil. It was recorded one year later by Mama Cass Elliot. The song was available a few months later on the japanese edition of "Eventually". The other song featured on the flexi is an unreleased version of "Hold On" by DM3.

Forgotten Power Pop from Australia (Never Reissued)

SPARE CHANGE - LONELY SUITS (1979)

Spare Change formed among Adelaide ex-pats in Amsterdam. Back in Adelaide, the band coalesced in 1973 as a pre-punk powerpop unit. The initial line-up included John Dowler (Young Modern, The Zimmermen) (vocals), Chris Langman (guitar), Bob Kretschmer (guitar), Tony Murray (keyboards), and John Wilkenson (drums). Wilkenson was soon replaced by Graeme Perry, and this would remain the definitive Spare Change line-up. After a solid couple of years playing Adelaide pubs, Spare Change relocated to Melbourne in early 1975. There, the band recorded "The Big Beat" which was issued as a single at the end of 1976 (b/w Classified Ad). Aided and abetted by Henry Vyhnal, the band continued recording until March 1977 with the intention of an LP release, but broke up before that eventuated. The posthumous Lonely Suits LP  was released in late 1979, and included both sides of the earlier single.

Best Tribute Album of 2005 (CD Only)

P. HUX - HOMEMADE SPACESHIP (2005)

The Music Of ELO Performed by P. Hux

After VeG was released, Parthenon Huxley's wife, Janet, died in 1997, and it was several years before he resumed his solo career. He released two albums, then joined Electric Light Orchestra Part II. And due to legal actions, the band was renamed The Orchestra for the "No Rewind" album (with the fabulous Huxley song Jewel and Johnny). In 2003 he began work on Homemade Spaceship, an album of ELO covers commissioned by Lakeshore Records of Hollywood, California. The album was awarded 2005 Tribute Album of the Year.

P. Hux Side Project (CD Only)

VeG - VeG (1997)

Featuring the late Parthenon Huxley, this record was recorded in the early 90s and shelved when the band's drummer was called away by Bob Dylan for five years (Winston Watson)! VeG is not "Deluxe" (1995) revisited (but 1/3 of the songs do have pure pop centers). lt's rocking, rootsy bar pop night out. The pop configuration is deftly present on the album. Fans of P. Hux should really like this little known side project.
