7" EP (Blue Vinyl Edition)

FINGERPRINTZ - WHO'S YOUR FRIEND? (1979)

The 7 EP "Who's Your Friend" was released on opaque blue vinyl. The four songs were not available on any of their albums, three originals and a new-wavey cover of Lennon-MCartney "Do You Want To Know A Secret". Then lead singer Step Lang left.

The Very Dab (Second Edition with a White Frame)

FINGERPRINTZ - THE VERY DAB (1979)

The primitively recorded "The Very Dab" first album occupies a dark, throbbing zone of bobbing pop and wry-to-bizarre lyrics ("Punchy Judy", "Beam Me Up Scotty"). Leader/guitarist Jimme O'Neill's Scottish accent and offbeat songwriting combine to chilling effect on the crime-obsessed narratives "Fingerprince" and "Wet Job"; the former's music also suggests a valid response to reggae/dub influence. Released first in an almost-all-black blurred-photo sleeve with badly matched shades of grey at the edges, so re-released almost immediately with an extra white border on the sleeve.

The Second Edition of The Third Album (Never Properly Reissued)

FINGERPRINTZ - BEAT NOIR (1981)

"Beat Noir" took yet another 180-degree turn, away from pop and towards a rock/funk fusion. Finally in synch with the times, Fingerprintz delivered a stunning, idiosyncratic package of heavy bass lines, winsome melodies and O'Neill's thematic fetishes (paranoia, frustration). The album was kinky enough to catch on in rock clubs, but too peculiar to reach a broader audience. Drenched in atmosphere, it remains a compelling work. The first version of the LP was rush released, but Jimme and the band then persuaded the label to let them record, more cheaply, three new songs ("The Beat Escape", "The Chase" and "Get Civilised") which were more upbeat, commercial and funky! Therefore they dropped four songs from the 1st edition: "Disorient Express", "Bohemian Dance", "Coffee And Screams" and "Madame X / Tickled To Death".
Jimme co-produced the new songs with Chris Porter. The label, feeling more hopeful, put out a new, finished version of the album with these songs included and issued "The Beat Escape" as a single. It flopped..

Produced by Nick Garvey (Never Properly Reissued)

FINGERPRINTZ - DISTINGUISHING MARKS (1980)

Formed by Scottish-born singer/guitarist Jimme O'Neill in 1978, Fingerprintz slowed down punk's careening guitar rock, adding clever, rhythmic twists and turns, and offering up deftly written stories about lust, angst, and urban desolation. It's difficult to categorize Fingerprintz, which may explain why the group never garnered a large following. Jimme O'Neill and Cha Burnz then found success as The Silencers.

The considerably slicker second album "Distinguishing Marks", is pure pop in extremis - musically, anyway. The songs hum like a finely tuned motor, with producer Nick Garvey removing any rough sonic edges. Only the relentlessly perverse lyrics betray a refusal to play by the book; O'Neill's disjointed visions are inspired by pulp fiction, police blotters and hospital charts. A catchy collection that all sounds like hit single material.

The album has never been properly reissued, though 4 songs from it, can be found on the 2020 anthology "The Best of Fingerprintz: Bullet Proof Heart".

Finally, the album is available on streaming sites as a total mess - first song of the original side 1 has been replaced by song 1 of side 2. Worse, all files are lossy and the Dynamic Range is a 9 - here's an example of a lossy file available on those streaming sites.

Motorsolo (Never Reissued)

NICK GARVEY - BLUE SKIES (1982)

On his solo album, Nick Garvey demonstrates the versatility of his voice (clear tenor, hoarse baritone, agile falsetto). But he's even more adroit at the mixing console, able to whip up tuneful, ringing Spector/Springsteen pop melodrama and make lush, spacious pop-rock out of the riff from "Willie and the Hand Jive." He also throws a curve or two, like the clever, 10cc-ish ("Think Tough") or the semi-parodic Squeeze-cum-Bowie of "Skin." But even the support by members of the Motors/Tyla/Bram Tchaikovsky axis and his own genuine likability we can't say this album was as great as his previous efforts with the Ducks or the Motors. Trouser Press

Yesterday's Music Today

ASS KICKING BONE CRUNCHING HEAVY METAL

vs

THE MOD MOD SOUNDS OF M8IDDLESEX (1997)

Featuring Rob Aldridge (Umajets) and Tim Smith (Jellyfish), Ass Kicking Bone Crunching Heavy Metal vs. The Mod Mod Sounds Of Middlesex was a concept album of 21 songs of 10 fictious "New Mod Acts" that is recorded like it could have been recorded in 1962 with authentic equipment, soundboards, amplifiers, etc...

The dating of the sound is uncannily just like what you would hear on the radio in 1962....literally. The pre-Mersey sound of The Searchers, Darlene Love, Freddy & The Dreamers, Billy Kramer, etc...

Eric Carmen R.I.P. (1949-08-11 / 2024-03-11)

RASPBERRIES - PALACE THEATRE (1973)

This complete recording of the Raspberries taping for Don Kirshner's Rock Concert TV program, recorded before an intimate audience at Manhattan's Palace Theatre in 1973, captures the group at the peak of their powers. Although only five songs were featured in the television broadcast, here one can enjoy the complete nine-song set, exactly as it went down. Containing material from their first three albums, as well as a pair of choice covers, this recording not only displays the band's vocal harmony prowess, but proves just how tight and talented this band actually was on stage.

Line-up:
Eric Carmen - vocals, rhythm guitar, piano; Jim Bonfanti - drums; Wally Bryson - vocals, lead guitar, synthesizer; Dave Smalley - vocals, bass

Custom artwork made in 2009 for PPC but it had never been posted at the time.

The Third Album (Never Reissued)

ANY TROUBLE - ANY TROUBLE (1983)

After signing to EMI America, Any Trouble's third album, with a half-new lineup, was produced by David Kershenbaum (Joe Jackson), and it was a great departure from the Costello references everybody had heard on the first two Stiff albums.  Some consider the album as the first great Any Trouble release, a wonderful new blend of soul and pop strengthened by Gregson's sharpening melodic sense and lightening lyrical outlook. "Please Don't Stop," "Man of the Moment," "Northern Soul" and other tracks resemble a non-obnoxious Hall and Oates crossed with Costello and recorded in Motown; production by David Kershenbaum provides the sonic variety and sophistication previously lacking. Gregson's development into a powerful, sensitive singer is merely the icing on the cake. But it's the only album never reissued or even available on any streaming sites.

Between Drums & Numbers (Never Reissued)

RICHARD BARONE & JAMES MASTRO - NUTS & BOLTS (1983)

Right after the first Bongos album "Drums Along the Hudson" (1982) (an expanded version of the Time and the River mini-album, itself a compilation of singles). The Bongos expanded from a trio with the fulltime addition of guitarist James Mastro (who also played with Richard Lloyd on the Alchemy album). In an offbeat variation on the solo record concept, Barone and Mastro dropped down to North Carolina to record "Nuts and Bolts" in collaboration with Mitch Easter. Each Bongo takes a side to showcase his own writing and singing, while helping the other out as well. The album never got any tour promotion until a concert reunion in 2018.

Boston's Fox Pass + Susan = NYC's Tom Dickie & The Desires (Never Reissued)

TOM DICKIE & THE DESIRES - THE ELEVENTH HOUR (1982)

Tom Dickie & The Desires existed from 1979 to 1983. Jon Macey and Tom Dickie had become friends during the peak of the Fox Pass at The Rat days. Tom Dickie was in a band called ‘Susan’ who had performed on the "Live at The Rat" album and were one of the top bands in Boston in those days.
In 1979, after the demise of both of their bands, Macey moved to NYC to form a songwriting partnership with Dickie. Michael Roy from Fox Pass followed a few months later, and they auditioned a series of drummers, settling on Ronnie Ball. They recorded their first album, "Competition," at Electric Lady studios in December 1980. Released in March of 1981, the LP yielded two radio hits across various US regions:'Downtown Talk' and 'Competition'.
By the summer of 1981, it was time to plan another album and Martin Rushent was called in again, but he declined to proceed. Ed Sprigg, who had worked with John Lennon, became producer. The aptly titled album, 'The Eleventh Hour,' was released in the summer of 1982, just as Macey abruptly quit the band. Tom Dickie and the Desires played more gigs and did some touring, but the label and management abandoned them quickly. The promise of the band at the beginning, to merge sharply crafted lyrics to the elusive power pop sound, lay in the dust of misfortune as the band dissolved. Their legacy is on the 2 released Mercury albums. There is enough material for a third Tom Dickie and the Desires album recorded and stored in boxes. Fox Pass reunited in 2005 and released two albums.
